Southwest Portland has a new low-cost mental-health center ...

A new low-cost health center serving those with mental health, addiction and relationship issues -- the Lewis & Clark Community Counseling Center -- has begun taking clients.

The center, at 4445 S.W. Barbur Blvd. offers counseling and therapy for individuals, couples and families. Fees are based on a sliding scale, ranging from $10 to $50 per session. The initial intake fee is $15; reduced fees may be negotiated for those enduring financial hardship, according to Lewis & Clark College.

The counseling center not only serves the community, but also provides training for students studying counseling and therapy, according to a college news release. Trainees are students from Lewis & Clark's Graduate School of Education and Counseling, and they're supervised by faculty and licensed professionals.

Among the center's primary goals: Serve the underserved, with a special focus on outreach to African Americans, Spanish speakers and lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer communities. Limited services are offered in Spanish.

The center is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays. It is not an inpatient or emergency care facility. To schedule an appointment, call 503-768-6320.
