NI Beijing office receives award for ?Outstanding Contributions to the Development of China?s Stainless Steel Industry?

?It is a real delight to have friends come from so far away! The Nickel Institute Beijing office has been an outstanding contributor to the development of China?s stainless steel industry. The Nickel Institute is a non-profit professional organization for nickel. 15 years ago it opened and took root in China. It has been dedicated to both raising the public awareness of nickel and stainless steel, and promoting its application in sectors such as iron and steel, chemistry and fertilizer, food processing, power grid, marine bio-chemistry, railway and rolling stocks, pharmaceutics, etc.. The Nickel Institute?s contribution to China has been impressive.?

These were the remarks given during the award presentation about the Nickel Institute Beijing Office at the 60th Anniversary Ceremony of China Stainless Steel Industrialization, held July 25-26 in Taiyuan, Shanxi province. The remarks show high regard for the outstanding achievements and contribution made by the Nickel Institute Beijing Office.

The 60th Anniversary Ceremony of China Stainless Steel Industrialization was a high-profile gathering hosted by the Stainless Steel Council of China Special Steel Enterprises Association, with over 300 delegates comprised of companies and individuals who made significant contributions to China?s stainless steel development. In attendance were industrial representatives from China and abroad, as well as international organizations.

In their keynote speeches, Li Xiaobo, Board Chairman of Taiyuan Iron and Steel Company, Chai Zhiyong, Vice-President of the Stainless Steel Council (on behalf of Li Cheng, Chairman of the organizing committee) and Xu Kuangdi, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences summed up and affirmed the rapid development of stainless steel in China in the past 60 years. They also pointed out that China?s stainless steel industry would enjoy stable and sustainable development in the days to come and the future applications of nickel and chrome would be optimistic.

Dr. Peter Cutler, Nickel Institute Promotion Director, gave a keynote address titled ?Stainless Steel: A Solution to Address Challenges in Sustainable Development?, in which he envisioned the role and future of stainless steel containing nickel with both texts and pictures.

During the ceremony, 54 experts, 14 companies and 6 organizations were awarded for their outstanding contribution to China?s stainless steel industry, of which, the Nickel Institute Beijing Office was one. In his award acceptance speech Mr. Zhang Licheng, China?s Managing Director of the Nickel Institute,?briefed the audience about the Nickel Institute?s activities in China. The Beijing Office was established in 1996 and has since maintained close collaboration with the Stainless Steel Council in 3 major areas:

  1. Raising public awareness of nickel. 175 seminars had been held involving 16,777 participants. The topics covered building decoration, chemical industry, power generation and transportation, etc.;

  2. Providing technical support. Great resources have been invested in providing technical information to China?s stainless steel sector by translating into Chinese a large amount of technical documents of Nickel Institute, compiling relevant materials, and putting up a Chinese website;

  3. Promoting reasonable applications of nickel. The application of nickel-containing stainless steel and other nickel-containing materials in traditional sectors as well emerging sectors, such as environmental protection, has been promoted through various channels.

Towards the end of his speech, Mr. Zhang expressed his gratitude to his colleagues in the stainless steel industry and promised that while commemorating the 60th anniversary of China?s stainless steel and the 16th anniversary of the establishment of the Nickel Institute Beijing Office, the Nickel Institute will continue to support the stable development of stainless steel in China and to join hands with Chinese partners to make an even greater contribution to China?s stainless steel industry.
