Sitting right in the beating heart of Chinatown, Dessert Story, a new restaurant serving Taiwanese and Hong Kong ?dessert secrets?, can be spotted by its glowing red lanterns and the queues out the door.
I have to be honest; while I?m a massive dessert fan, I was a little hesitant about my trip, never having really eaten Asian style desserts before. However, I was surprisingly impressed.
The menu offers up a large range of desserts and drinks. Once you start reading things like Tofu Pudding it?s pretty fun choosing which type of crushed ice you?re going to have.
While we didn?t try the Tofu Pudding, we did venture out of our dessert comfort zones and ordered the Mixed Pudding: chocolate, mango and milk ($5). Served atop a mound of sweetened shaved ice, the texture could be compared to firm jelly, but with a creamier flavour. It was unlike anything I?ve ever eaten before.
Next up was Watermelon Grass Jelly in watermelon juice ($5.50). This was a lovely refreshing dessert, the tiny cubes of grass jelly had a slightly bitter aftertaste, like strong tea, which complimented the sweetness of the watermelon juice. Last was the Strawberry Snow Ice ($8.80). This dish is simply a mountain of sweetened shaved ice covered in fresh strawberries and strawberry syrup. A super sweet dish made for sharing, it was the most popular one of the night.
So after you have had your dumpling fix next time in Chinatown, pop into Dessert Story for some after dinner sweets.
