DMK demands joint probe by India, UAE in Indian fisherman's killing case

The DMK on Thursday demanded a joint probe by India and United Arab Emirates (UAE) into the recent incident of firing on Indian fishermen by American Navy guards off the Dubai coast.

The party, which is a part of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), also asked the Centre to seek compensation from the United States and give interim aide to the affected families. The DMK MPs submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard.
?
"Government must impress upon them for a full investigation in the case so that it would help to avoid tragic incidents of this kind in future elsewhere in the world," the memorandum read.
?
Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had also written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking the Indian government's intervention in the firing incident, in which an Indian was killed and two others were injured.

Govt waiting for embassy report: Krishna
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna told Headlines Today that the government was waiting for the report from its embassy in the UAE on the incident before planning its next move.
?
"I am expecting a report from our ambassador... Only after seeing the report could we come to a conclusion... You have the luxury of speculating. I can only go by the report and the facts," Krishna said.
?
Asked when the report was expected, he said, "I don't know... must be on the way."

UAE backs fishermen's claim
Even while India has taken the road of polite diplomacy despite an Indian life lost, the Dubai authorities stood up to challenge the US claims on what happened on Monday afternoon.
?
The Dubai Police not only launched an investigation immediately after the incident, but it found that the US naval ship, USNS Rappahannock, did not warn the fishermen. According to the authorities, the fishing vessel was trying to move away from the naval ship.
?
The US had earlier accused the fishermen of ignoring the naval ship's warnings and that the firing was done in self-defence.
