Unsure robots make better teachers than know-alls

The best way to learn is to teach. Now a classroom robot that helps Japanese children learn English has put that old maxim to the test.

Shizuko Matsuzoe and Fumihide Tanaka at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, set up an experiment to find out how different levels of competence in a robot teacher affected children's success in learning English words for shapes.

They observed how 19 children aged between 4 and 8 interacted with a humanoid Nao robot in a learning game in which each child had to draw the shape that corresponded to an English word such as 'circle', 'square', 'crescent', or 'heart'.

The researchers operated the robot from a room next to the classroom so that it appeared weak and feeble, and the children were encouraged to take on the role of carers. The robot could then either act as an instructor, drawing the correct shape for the child, or make mistakes and act as if it didn't know the answer.

When the robot got a shape wrong, the child could teach the robot how to draw it correctly by guiding its hand. The robot then either "learned" the English word for that shape or continued to make mistakes.

Robot learner aids learning

Matsuzoe and Tanaka found that the children did best when the robot appeared to learn from them. This also made the children more likely to want to continue learning with the robot. The researchers will present their results at Ro-Man - an international symposium on robot and human interactive communication - in September.

"Anything that gets a person more actively engaged and motivated is going to be beneficial to the learning process," says Andrea Thomaz , director of the Socially Intelligent Machines lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. "So needing to teach the robot is a great way of doing that."

The idea of students learning by teaching also agrees with a lot of research in human social learning, she says. The process of teaching a robot is akin to what happens in peer-to-peer learning, where students teach each other or work in groups to learn concepts ? common activities in most classrooms.

ULA's Atlas V Celebrates Success x 2 NASA's Twin Probes Soar ...

[SatNews]..."The excitement of seeing the spacecraft in orbit and beginning to perform science measurements is like no other thrill..."

Most spacecraft try to avoid the Van Allen Belts, two doughnut-shaped regions around Earth filled with "killer electrons." This morning a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP), the first twin-spacecraft for NASA, lifted off from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral at 4:05 a.m. EDT today.

NASA?s two heavily-shielded spacecraft were launched directly into the belts. The Radiation Belt Storm Probes are on a two-year mission to study the Van Allen Belts and to unravel the mystery of their unpredictability. This is ULA?s 7th launch of the year, the 32nd Atlas V launch and marked the 63rd launch since ULA was formed in December 2006.

"The ULA team and our many mission partners are very proud of our role in delivering the twin RBPS spacecraft to orbit to conduct research about our space weather and gather important data that impacts our everyday life on Earth,? said Jim Sponnick, ULA vice president, Mission Operations. ?The successful launch of this mission is a tribute to the partnerships with the highly skilled and professional teams from NASA?s Launch Services Program and The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.?

This mission was launched aboard an Atlas V EELV 401 configuration vehicle, which includes a 4-meter diameter payload fairing. The Atlas booster for this mission was powered by the RD AMROSS RD-180 engine and the Centaur upper stage was powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne RL10A-4 engine.

RBSP will explore space weather?changes in Earth's space environment caused by the sun?that can disable satellites, create power grid failures, and disrupt GPS service. The mission also will allow researchers to understand fundamental radiation and particle acceleration processes throughout the universe.

"Scientists will learn in unprecedented detail how the radiation belts are populated with charged particles, what causes them to change and how these processes affect the upper reaches of the atmosphere around Earth," said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate at Headquarters in Washington. "The information collected from these probes will benefit the public by allowing us to better protect our satellites and understand how space weather affects communications and technology on Earth."

The two satellites, each weighing just less than 1,500 pounds, comprise the first dual-spacecraft mission specifically created to investigate this hazardous regions of near-Earth space, known as the radiation belts.

These two belts, named for their discoverer, James Van Allen, encircle the planet and are filled with highly charged particles. The belts are affected by solar storms and coronal mass ejections and sometimes swell dramatically. When this occurs, they can pose dangers to communications, GPS satellites and human spaceflight.

"We have never before sent such comprehensive and high-quality instruments to study high radiation regions of space," said Barry Mauk, RBSP project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland. "RBSP was crafted to help us learn more about, and ultimately predict, the response of the radiation belts to solar inputs."

The hardy RBSP satellites will spend the next 2 years looping through every part of both Van Allen belts. By having two spacecraft in different regions of the belts at the same time, scientists finally will be able to gather data from within the belts themselves, learning how they change over space and time. Designers fortified RBSP with special protective plating and rugged electronics to operate and survive within this punishing region of space that other spacecraft avoid. In addition, a space weather broadcast will transmit selected data from those instruments around the clock, giving researchers a check on current conditions near Earth.

"The excitement of seeing the spacecraft in orbit and beginning to perform science measurements is like no other thrill," said Richard Fitzgerald, RBSP project manager at APL. "The entire RBSP team, from across every organization, worked together to produce an amazing pair of spacecraft."

During the next 60 days, operators will power up all flight systems and science instruments and deploy long antenna booms, two of which are more than 54 yards long. Data about the particles that swirl through the belts, and the fields and waves that transport them, will be gathered by five instrument suites designed and operated by teams at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark; the University of Iowa in Iowa City; University of Minnesota in Minneapolis; and the University of New Hampshire in Durham; and the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Va. The data will be analyzed by scientists across the nation almost immediately.

LWS is managed by the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. APL built the RBSP spacecraft and will manage the mission for NASA. NASA's Launch Services Program at Kennedy is responsible for launch management. United Launch Alliance provided the Atlas V launch service.

Since the inaugural flights in 2002, Atlas V and Delta IV launch vehicles have delivered more than 50 critical capabilities including vital national security missions for the U.S. Air Force and National Reconnaissance Office, science and exploration payloads for NASA and commercial imaging and communications satellites.? ?Just last week the ULA team celebrated the 10th anniversary of the first Atlas V launch,? said Sponnick. ?In the last decade, the Atlas V and Delta IV EELV systems have demonstrated outstanding success in launching our customer?s missions.??

ULA?s Atlas V and Delta IV launch vehicles provide a 33 percent cost savings over heritage launch systems and are the most commercially developed vehicles flying today with Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company having funded 80 percent of their development.

Developed by the United States Air Force to provide assured access to space for Department of Defense and other government payloads, the commercially developed EELV Program supports the full range of government mission requirements, while delivering on schedule and providing significant cost savings over the heritage launch systems.

ULA's next launch is the Atlas V NROL-36 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office planned for September 13 from Space Launch Complex-3 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

ULA program management, engineering, test, and mission support functions are headquartered in Denver, Colorado.? Manufacturing, assembly and integration operations are located at Decatur, Alabama, and Harlingen, Texas. Launch operations are located at Cape Canaveral AFS, Florida, and Vandenberg AFB, California.

Since 1998, NASA?s Launch Services Program has been based at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, and provides oversight as the designs of the rocket and mission are integrated with each other.

Biden: Obama leadership saved auto plants

LORDSTOWN, Ohio (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden mounted the Democratic counterpoint to the Republican presidential ticket Friday, drawing attention to the Obama administration's rescue of the auto industry and portraying GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney as a foe of government efforts to save jobs.

Laying out President Barack Obama's indictment of Republican polices, Biden said that Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, has voted in Congress for measures that caused massive federal debts, including two wars, a prescription drug benefit and tax cuts for the wealthy that were not paid for.

"They call their plan new, bold and gutsy," Biden told about 200 supporters in a union hall. "There is nothing gutsy about giving another trillion dollars in tax cuts to millionaires; there is nothing bold about turning Medicare into a voucher system. There is nothing bold about kicking 19 million kids and elderly off of Medicaid with no place else to go."

Biden spoke about two miles from the sprawling GM plant in Lordstown in an event meant to emphasize the importance of the auto bailout to Ohio. The recoveries of GM and Chrysler have been recurrent themes in Obama's re-election campaign, particularly in states such as Michigan and the battleground of Ohio.

Biden criticized Romney for opposing a taxpayer rescue of GM and Chrysler.

"What they didn't acknowledge is Governor Romney's position was 'let Detroit go bankrupt,'" he said, quoting the headline on a 2008 Romney opinion piece in the New York Times.

Ryan campaign spokesman Brendan Buck responded that Obama inherited a troubled economy but has made it worse.

"Like many towns across America, Janesville, Wis., is still waiting for the recovery the president promised," Buck said, referring to Ryan's hometown, where a GM auto plant was idled in 2008.

Biden's remarks came as Romney and Ryan left their Republican National Convention in Tampa seeking the votes of former Obama supporters who have grown disenchanted with his presidency.

Obama traveled to Texas on Friday, where addressed military families on the second anniversary of the end of combat operations in Iraq.

A's grab wild-card lead

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:44 p.m. ET Aug. 29, 2012

CLEVELAND (AP) - After consecutive shutouts, the Oakland Athletics' pitching staff was OK with a little offensive outburst from their teammates.

Josh Donaldson hit a three-run homer and five pitchers combined to beat the struggling Cleveland Indians 8-4 on Wednesday night.

"We did what we needed to win," manager Bob Melvin said after Oakland took over the AL wild-card lead by one game over Baltimore with its 11th win in 13 games.

"We didn't close it out in the fashion we usually do," Melvin said. "The offense was good to see. Our at-bats got better as the game went along."

Yoenis Cespedis and Josh Reddick each had three of Oakland's 15 hits as the Athletics moved to 7-0 against the Indians since April 22, outscoring them 44-14.

Travis Blackley (5-3) gave up two runs over 5 2-3 innings. Ryan Cook got four outs for his 13th save.

"Travis was little out of sync, but overall did well," Melvin said. "Our starters have gotten into a little competition. It is like, `You set the bar and I want to raise it the next day.' "

The Athletics are 8-4 in the left-hander's starts. Oakland starters are 9-2 with a 2.70 ERA over the past 13 games. Blackley walked two, extending the starting staff's streak of two or fewer walks to 25 games.

"They have a very good pitching staff," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "They're tough. We can see why they're playing the way they are playing."

Donaldson connected off rookie Corey Kluber (0-3) in the fourth for a 3-2 lead. Shoddy fielding by the Indians, losers of 13 of 14, helped Oakland later extend the lead.

Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was ejected in the first by plate umpire Gary Darling, who took exception to the All-Star arguing a called third strike. The whiff made Cabrera 4 for 36 (.111) in his last 10 games.

"Everybody knows (Darling) missed the pitch," Acta said. "What's hard is we spent a lot of time today talking to Cabrera about his struggles as of late because he's been chasing a lot of pitches out of the zone and how he has to be more patient. He worked a tremendous at-bat there and the guy missed the pitch."

Cleveland, scoreless in 52 of its last 57 innings, scored more than three runs for the first time in 10 games.

Jason Donald's homer in the third broke the Indians' 24-inning scoreless streak, but they fell to 5-26 since July 27. It was the Indians' first run against the Athletics in 29 innings. They hadn't scored against them since the ninth inning of an 8-5 loss in Oakland on Aug. 18.

Ezequiel Carrera then tripled and scored on a groundout by Jason Kipnis.

Donaldson made it 3-2 in the fourth, hitting a two-out, 3-2 pitch for his third homer.

"My first thought was fastball," Donaldson said. "He had shown me all his breaking balls. He hung one and I was able to hit it out."

Kluber's defense deserted him in the sixth. With Reddick on first with a one-out infield single, the right-hander got Donaldson to ground to third. Jack Hannahan fielded the ball and threw to second to start a possible double play, but his toss went through second baseman Donald's legs, putting runners on first and third. Donald was charged with the error for failing to get the low but accurate throw.

Derek Norris followed with an RBI grounder to first baseman Matt LaPorta, who stepped on first for the out. LaPorta turned to throw to second for an inning-ending double play, but instead held the ball before throwing home, too high and too late to get Reddick sliding in.

Seth Smith doubled home a run and scored on Carter's single in the seventh to make it 6-2.

Cleveland got two unearned runs in the eighth after an error by Donaldson at third.

"It was one of the weirdest things I've ever had happen to me on the field," he said after the ball slipped out of his glove on a rundown play.

Kluber struck out a career-high seven without issuing a walk over six innings.

NOTES: Indians RHP Jeanmar Gomez worked one scoreless inning after being recalled from Triple-A Columbus when OF Shelley Duncan was designated for assignment. Duncan had exactly 11 homers and 29 runs in each of his three years in Cleveland. ... Indians 3B Lonnie Chisenhall, out since June 30 (broken right forearm), could begin a minor-league rehab assignment this weekend. ... Oakland 3B Brandon Inge, out since Aug. 12 (sprained right shoulder), may not be recalled from his rehab until rosters are expanded Saturday. ... Indians RHP Roberto Hernandez threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session and is set to start Saturday against Texas. He left Monday's start with a sprained right ankle. ... There were 366 dogs in the stands on tickets bought by fans for a "Puppypalooza" promotion.

VENITISM: MAHDI VIRUS ATTACKS MOSTLY IRANIAN COMPUTERS

Governments and gangs realize malware is much cheaper than mainstream warfare.
Malware, short for malicious software, consists of programming designed to
disrupt operation, gather information that leads to loss of privacy or
exploitation, gain unauthorized access to system resources, and other abusive
behavior. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware,
dishonest adware, scareware, crimeware, rootkits, and other malicious and
unwanted software or program. In law, malware is sometimes known as computer
contaminant.

Israeli Seculert and Russian Kaspersky have identified thousand Mahdi virus
victims. Mahdi keeps running, which implies that Mahdi's operators are not
worried about getting caught.

Malware makers can hide their tracks using spoofing, VPNs, proxy services, and
other means to make it look like they are based in any number of countries -
when in truth they are somewhere completely different.

Stuxnet targeted Iran's nuclear program in 2010. After that customer-built virus
was uncovered by a security researcher in Belarus, authorities in Iran
discovered it in a uranium enrichment facility.

Occident has developed electronic weapons that could be used to defend the West
against cyber attacks or prevent them. Occident is prepared to strike first in a
cyber conflict. Cyber arms grow out of control. No government can guarantee it
can protect a country or entity against cyber attack. In future wars, there will
be a cyber element. Countries hope that if they threaten to use missiles to
retaliate against a cyber attack, others will think twice about launching one.

Mahdi is a less professional operation that runs on technology built with widely
available software. If the quality of your operation is not that high, then
maybe you don't care about being discovered. Mahdi lets remote attackers steal
files from infected PCs and monitor emails as well as instant messages. It can
also record audio, log keystrokes, and take screen shots of activity on those
computers.

Targets of Mahdi include critical infrastructure firms, financial services
firms, and government embassies located in five Middle Eastern countries, with
the majority of the infections in Iran. The campaign is being run by
hactivists, who are either funded by a government or provide information they
collect to a nation for ideological reasons.

Internet security firms make more money when people are more scared of malware,
and Eugene Kaspersky declares that cyber terrorism can bring the end of
civilization! A global Internet blackout and crippling attacks against key
infrastructure are among two possible cyber-pandemics. Kaspersky is afraid cyber
terrorism is just beginning. Very soon, many countries around the world will
know it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Kaspersky hoodwinks it will be the end of
the world as we know it!

Kaspersky hoodwinks the evolution from cyber war to cyber terrorism comes from
the indiscriminate nature of cyber weapons. Very much like a modern-day
Pandora's Box, Flame and other forms of malware cannot be controlled upon
release. Faced with a replicating threat that knows no national boundaries,
cyber weapons can take down infrastructure around the world, hurting scores of
innocent victims along the way.

LG's Smart TV alliance grows, promises first crossplatform HDTV apps in September

The Smart TV Alliance consisting of LG and TP Vision (Philips) is still hammering away at its dream of platform-independent Smart TV apps, and as IFA 2012 gets under way it has a few new announcements. After promising Japanese manufacturers would join back in June it has welcomed Toshiba to the fold, as well as other supporters like Qaulcomm, Mstar, Onigo and YuMe. At IFA 2012, LG is showing off the first apps built to the original SDK 1.0 spec built by Accuweather, Eurosport, online music channel Vilanoise and others. It's not stopping there however, as the SDK 2.0 we'd heard about is still due before 2012 is out, and has been built to take advantage of the new more powerful SoCs that companies like Qualcomm (the S4 family) and Mstar can provide to HDTV manufacturers.

Working From Home - The Latest Options | Making Money From Home

While these ideas are not necessarily new, the ways in which they are being performed have changed dramatically over the last couple of years. As consumers grow savvier, products and services need to continually improve and the businesses involved need to employ new ideas and strategies to stay ahead of the curve. So here we go, my favourite three ways to get started working from home.

Number 1: Network Marketing

Network marketing is one of those terms people either love or hate (and due to some horror stories in the past, mostly the latter). Otherwise known as multi-level-marketing (which it seems people don?t like using these days due to the negative connotations), network marketing involves moving a product through a network of people collecting commissions off one?s down-line. It?s important to step away from any old preconceived ideas of what this business model is you may have however. It has stepped into the light in a big way in the 21st century, and old images of people stockpiling water filters in their garages, chasing up their friends about their ?new business opportunity? and hosting ?business meetings? in their lounge rooms are no longer relevant. Modern network marketing involves sophisticated online lead generation, automated marketing funnels, and utilizes an informed and professional sales network to move products that are generally too specialist or high end to be moved through traditional retail chains. Legitimate network marketing companies generally offer a product or service that is of a higher quality than what people can find in their supermarkets and shops, which requires knowledgeable sales people and strong interpersonal relationships. Aligning yourself with the right company in a growing sector can see you build a sizable distributorship which over the years can provide a solid residual income, allowing you to spend your time on other things you?d love to do, besides working. I particularly like this business model because I like to be paid several times over for one unit of work, just like royalties.

Number 2: Blogging For Dollars

We see them everywhere, and it seems we know someone who has one. What am I talking about? Blogs! Seriously though, can someone actually create an income source from writing about a particular topic? With patience and discipline it?s entirely possible. Where most people go wrong is they start out writing about a topic they are actually not interested in, just because they think it?s popular and will make money. This is a sure fire way to become impatient and bored with what you are doing. Picking a hot topic and throwing up a bunch of articles overnight with some advertising links just won?t cut it. Your blog needs to have a unique voice? your voice.

So write about something you are truly passionate about. An original and unique blog in which readers can see the blogger has a deep understanding and passion about their topic will gain a much stronger audience and authoritative stance online. People will actually link to your blog because it?s obvious you actually know what you are on about. Once you have built up a small base of followers you can then think about monetizing your website (getting paid to blog). Google AdSense is the most foolproof and generally in most scenarios the highest returning ad platform to run on a website, especially a blog(due to its simple integration with many blog platforms like WordPress). Your unique and authoritative blog will begin receiving traffic and a percentage of it will inevitably click through on some of your ad links, creating a nice revenue stream. Hit it big with a popular blog and those clicks can add up to hundreds and even thousands of dollars a day. Not bad for a couple of hours a week writing about something you love. Beyond AdSense there are numerous other ways to monetize a blog and here are a short few in point form:

  • Display related affiliate offers throughout your posts in which you receive a commission as a result of any sales that happen as a result of people buying from your recommendation/link.
  • Build a mailing list in which you can then send other related offers down the track.
  • Once you blog is sizable, sell advertising space or editorials.

Building a blog with a good readership and steady stream of traffic is something that won?t pay off immediately, but your ROI will continue to increase per unit of time spent the longer you spend with it. This will continue to the point where you are getting paid many many times over for just a small amount of work from home per week creating unique original content. This happens almost to the point of a walk away home based income, although some may say that once you reach that point of success it?s not quite as set and forget as an existing MLM distributorship (assuming their company continues to stay in business, which many don?t).

Number 3: Online Product/Information Creation

Potentially the most difficult, but also brings the greatest potential payoff. Coming up with an original online product seems like a daunting task, but the workload and skills required are often a lot less than you may think at first. Your original info product or service may even be something as simple as an eBook about how to do something in particular. People have made millions of dollars online and continue to do so with online product creation. Creating a simple physical product and then using the internet as your main sales avenue is also another way to look at this opportunity. Just like with blog writing, there would be a field in which you could be regarded as an expert. It is best to go about creating your product in this field. Here are some simple examples of products where people have created a business out of thin air, making many times their return on investment and carving out a very decent ongoing revenue stream.

  • A product teaching your bird to talk.
  • Product teaching your cat to use the toilet instead of kitty litter.
  • Simple online applications to automate daily rituals people do on their computers (programming can be outsourced very cheaply often for $10 and under an hour)

I hope this has given you some fresh insight into some pre-existing ideas to work from home. Where there is a will there is a way, and as someone who has worked at home for themselves online since high school and throughout university with these exact business models, I know that it is possible for you to do it too. All you need to do is take a first step, stick with it and keep learning. Don?t move onto one thing from another, get one idea working before you move ahead and be willing to make some mistakes along the way. In time it all becomes easier and the window of possibility continues to widen. Good Luck!

Overtime complaints common in US, worldwide

By Allison Linn, TODAY

It?s no secret that many Americans feel like the weak economy has forced them to do more work for the same or even less pay.

A new survey finds they have lots of company among workers around the world.

About two-thirds of hourly workers surveyed in Great Britain, France, Australia, China, Canada, Mexico, India and Brazil said their employers violate overtime rules at least some of the time.

In the U.S., slightly less than half the hourly workers surveyed had the same complaint.

The survey was conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Kronos Inc., which makes technology for human resources operations.

Chinese, Indian and British workers were most likely to complain that their rights had been violated. The French were most likely to say their bosses don?t violate overtime rules.

The?hourly?workers surveyed generally said they were eager to work extra hours, presumably because they expect that will lead to more pay.

Among the workers surveyed in other countries, more than half said they were happy to have the overtime hours they got, and one-third said they?d like to have more overtime hours. French, Canadian and British respondents were most likely to say they wanted more OT.

Among the U.S. workers surveyed, 49 percent said they were happy with the amount of overtime hours they work, and another 43 percent said they wished they could work more hours.

In the U.S., there has been a record jump in employee claims of wage and hour violations, including off-the-clock work and?miscalculation?of overtime pay. More than 7,000 people have filed claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act so far this year, according to calculation from law firm Seyfarth Shaw. That?s up from around 2,000 a decade earlier.

The sample for the Kronos survey included 666 U.S. hourly workers and 1,700 hourly workers from other countries.

Engadget Giveaway: win a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro dev tablet!

Engadget Giveaway win a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Development Tablet!

The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Mobile Development Platform (MDP) tablet is not your typical Android-based slate -- it's a developer's best friend. This particular MDP houses a quad-core Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 chip, Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB LPDDR2 RAM, and its primary purpose for even existing is to help devs test their games and apps on a true-blue device before OEM products begin hitting the market later this year. It's the most impressive quad-core tablet (in terms of performance) we've ever played with, but at $1,299 a pop, it isn't cheap. But that's where you, dear reader, come in: the slate you see above is going to be handed out to a lucky winner, and all you have to do is leave a comment in the usual place. Don't forget to read the rules below, and best of luck!

Preventing Surgical Infections Using Teamwork and ?Local Wisdom ...

From 15 to 30% of people who have colorectal surgery will get an surgical-site infection?and those surgical infections (just among colorectal patients) cost an estimated $1 billion a year. The surgical infections cause longer hospital stays; are the most common cause of hospital readmission within 30 days; and require more doctor visits, wound-care supplies, and home care. Not to mention the added difficulties for patients and their families.

A two-year study at Johns Hopkins Hospital, just published in the August 2012 Journal of the American College of Surgeons, describes how a team of front-line providers used their ?local wisdom? plus an evidence-based safety system to cut their infection rate in colorectal surgery patients by 33.3 percent in one year.

Reducing surgical infections improves patient care and saves dollars?a national priority shared by Medicare and other insurers, medical staff, and patients alike. A national Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) using standardized checklists and measures was launched six years ago, but four recent studies show little connection between compliance and?overall patient outcomes.

Leaders at Johns Hopkins Hospital decided to add an element seen in other successful quality-improvement programs?intentionally bridging the typical divide between front-line staff and the experts who bring in a standardized improvement system.

They formed a team of surgery, anesthesia, nursing, and infection control leaders, plus a team coach (to facilitate meetings and manage improvement projects), and a hospital executive who could help front-line staff overcome institutional barriers. The leadership team also invited other interested front-line nurses, nurse anesthetists, scrub technicians, and anesthesiologists to join what became a 36-member team. They launched a CUSP (Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program) that used the national SCIP checklist, but also added their own interventions to the checklist:

  • Only surgical nurses, rather than a variety of staff, did the pre-op skin preparation on each patient ;
  • All patients were given antibiotic-treated wash cloths to use the evening before surgery;
  • After studying literature, the team added oral antibiotics to routine pre-surgical mechanical bowel preparation;
  • Because a separate hospital study showed that many patients were hypothermic both before and after surgery, they began warming patients in the pre-anesthesia area;
  • When scrub technicians pointed out that instruments used for intestinal suturing were also frequently used for skin closure, the team designed a system to replace all instruments and change the entire teams? surgical gloves after completing the bowel work and again before beginning wound closure; and
  • The team found and fixed lapses in giving antibiotics after surgery.

This last action showed why ?local wisdom? might improve standardized checklists.

Previous compliance was 99 percent with the national SCIP measure of ?appropriate antibiotic selection.? But frank talk on the team revealed that staff didn?t think all patients were actually getting the correct medications. In fact, before the team was formed, only 33% of penicillin-allergic patients were getting recommended doses of the gentamicin/clindamycin recommended by the infection control staff. (Patients were either under-dosed or not receiving gentamicin because of concerns about side-effects.) After team intervention, 92% of patients received the correct antibiotics.

Based on average costs of $6,000 to $10,000 per surgical-site infection, the study authors estimated that by decreasing their infection rate by 33%, their hospital saved from $168,000 to $280,000 in one year alone? just among?its 278 colorectal surgery patients.

The authors described study limitations?it was not randomized; it was only at one hospital; and all improvement measures were introduced simultaneously and not analyzed separately for effectiveness. They called for further, multi-institutional studies.

But their overall conclusion: ?Formation of small groups of front-line providers to address patient harm using local wisdom and existing evidence can improve patient safety. ?

The Best Ways to Open a Stubborn Jar Lid [Video]

The Best Ways to Open a Stubborn Jar LidThe Best Ways to Open a Stubborn Jar Lid Everyone has their favorite method for opening a stubborn jar lid, but the folks at America's Test Kitchen have a great selection of tips that'll get any stubborn lid unscrewed if your favorite method doesn't work.

We've discussed several of these before, from the rubber band method to plastic wrap or hot water, but one thing that I always forget?especially with sticky jars?is to put some plastic wrap over the opening to make it easier to dislodge next time, the way the video suggests. The best thing about these suggestions however is that they all work without you having to go out and buy a special "jar opening glove" or kitchen gadget to do the job.

$29 for a 20-Minute Teeth-Whitening Treatment at Whiten My Smile Now ($139 Value)

$29 for 20-Minute Teeth-Whitening Session ($139 Value)

A qualified technician applies an efficient brush-on solution under an LED lamp that emits blue light to quickly lift stains and whiten teeth. The procedure can leave smiles two to eight shades brighter in a mere 20 minutes.

Whiten My Smile Now

Whiten My Smile Now helps one brighten their teeth while also saving them a trip to the dentist. It?s a convenience that has rapidly ascended in popularity: over 30,000 clients have sought out the service since 2008. But the specially trained technicians haven?t let the number intimidate them. They still take the time to prepare every person with a consultation before assessing current teeth shades with a chart that ranges from ?yellow? to ?cartoon ding.? Patients then recline beneath an LED light for approximately 20 minutes, which activates a whitening gel applied by the technician. Following, the procedure, clients examine the color chart to see how their teeth have changed in color.

Two- or Three-Night Stay for Up to Four at Marina Inn Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach

Tranquil Four-Star Resort with Two Championship Golf Courses

Situated along the Intracoastal Waterway, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes initially presents a fountain-and-palm-tree fa?ade fairly typical of Myrtle Beach's many resorts. But the unassuming exterior belies a homey, highly personal experience that begins in the lobby, where check in occurs not across a chest-high counter but at one of two old-fashioned wooden desks. A concierge is on hand to book tee times at the onsite championship golf courses or dispense tips on the multitude of family-friendly attractions within reach of the inn.

In each of the 450-square-foot Grande guest rooms, a sliding door reveals a terrace where padded wicker chairs offer a cozy spot to take in views of the waterway or marina. The room's lavish bathrooms are stocked with Vive bath products and diamond-encrusted rubber duckies.

At Waterscapes Restaurant, Chef Robbie Nicolaisen personally selects fresh-caught seafood for entrees ranging from crispy oysters to black bass. The upscale eatery supports local farmers and surprises dinner guests with an unexpected post-meal treat?a freshly spun tuft of pink cotton candy.

One of the resort's two golf courses?the Grande Dunes Resort Club?was named National Course of the Year in 2009 by the National Golf Course Owners Association. In warmer weather, you can take a dip in the infinity-edge pool, open year-round, or relax on the resort's private-access beachfront, which is open on weekends through September 30.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Coastal Adventure and Exotic Wildlife

Cooper got a rough start in life. At just three months old, the doberman-hound mix was found on the side of the road, a plastic bag over his head. Thankfully, Cooper's owners rescued him soon after, but his experiences left him with separation anxiety, aggression, and resistance to basic commands. Enter Glenn Shue, owner and lead trainer of Dogtastic Dog Training. Glenn's approach begins by first considering each canine's unique personality, which helps him tailor a training program that combines obedience training with proper socialization. All Wags Doggie Daycare and Boarding North

In 2005, Karen McCombs left the corporate world. It was a big decision, but she had a simple reason: "I just decided I wanted to play with dogs," she says. Today, two of her sons work at the original All Wags location in Charlotte, and she and Josh Hartsell?another son?have headed out to open All Wags Doggie Daycare and Boarding North in Harrisburg. They've painted the 9,000 square feet of indoor play space with colorful canine murals, but there's also plenty of room outdoors for a dog to play ball, leap into kiddie pools, or plant its owner's flag on the peaks of plastic playground equipment.

The staff takes the time to get to know each dog, from their names to what they like and what they're scared of?and Karen says the dogs are excited to come in and play. She makes sure the staff ratio stays at about 10 dogs to 1 staff member during doggy daycare so that pooches get plenty of attention and exercise. Except for a two-hour rest period, the dogs are out and about the entire time, rather than being cooped up alone at home or made to sit in a cage and nibble listlessly on homework. "It's just a fun, exhausting day for [the dogs]," she says. "They go home and they're very tired." Dogs who are staying the night play with daycare dogs during the day, then retire to 4'x8' kennels with heating and cooling. To make sure everyone's safe, all supervisors are certified in pet first aid by the American Red Cross and have been endorsed by multiple doggy-sniff committees.

For Karen, working with her canine customers has been rewarding, and she knows their human owners appreciate the time she and her staff take to get to know their dogs and individuals. "Everybody's just so happy and ready to see you. It's not like that in the corporate world anymore," she says.

  • $10 for a morning and evening pet visit to your home (a $20 value)
  • $7 for a 30-minute visit to your home (a $15 value)

After providing some companionship, staff members can provide optional services such as bringing in the newspaper and mail, cleaning litter boxes, watering plants, or taking out the trash. Each visit includes a personal note detailing services completed.

The value of the morning and evening visit may instead be applied toward any of Wags In the City?s services (except for pet taxi or pooper scooper).

Wags In the City

Born into an animal-loving family that housed pets ranging from birds to ferrets and dogs to pigs, Beth Hahn naturally developed a passion for caring for domestic animals. At only 26, she boasts a seven-year history in the pet industry; her resume lists off her experience in boarding, doggy daycare, overnight pet sitting, grooming, and more. In April of 2009, she funneled her childhood passion and professional experiences into Wags In the City?a pet-service provider she hopes will exceed customer expectations. To do this, she rounded up a team of passionate caretakers committed to offering pet owners comprehensive pet-care services, such as overnight sitting, transportation, and translating barks during negotiations over couch-sitting privileges. Hahn aspires to go above and beyond traditional businesses, and during at-home pet visits the team throws in additional complimentary services, including watering plants and taking out the trash. Because she wants to ensure both pets and owners live in a great community, her business also gives back to the Charlotte area, donating time, services, and money.
