Just as with cars and off-road vehicles, it?s important to have insurance on watercraft (boats, jet skis). Based on some new statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), which released its latest report on watercraft theft and recovery statistics, this is especially true if you live (or dock your boat) in Florida.
According to the NICB?s numbers, Florida tops the country for the highest number of reported watercraft thefts in the calendar year 2011, with 1,322, followed by California (550), Texas (437) Washington (224) and North Carolina (205) all of which had significantly fewer reported stolen boats and other water crafts. Surprisingly, Hawaii, the state comprised entirely of islands, reported no stolen watercraft at all in 2011.
The report didn?t just list the number of craft that were stolen, but also shared the top five most stolen kinds of watercraft, with the ultra-portable Jet Ski-type craft heading the list, and sailboats at the bottom. The greatest number of reported thefts ? 792 ? were in June, while the fewest reports (281) were filed in December.
If you own a boat or other watercraft, the NICB recommends the following anti-theft tips (quoted directly from their website):
? When docking the watercraft, lock it and secure it to the dock with a steel cable.
? Remove expensive equipment when not in use.
? Chain and lock detachable motors to the boat.
? Do not leave title or registration papers in the craft.
? Disable the craft by shutting fuel lines or removing batteries.
? Use a trailer hitch lock after parking a boat on its trailer.
? Install a kill switch in the ignition system.
We would like to add: if your watercraft is not covered by insurance, begin comparison shopping today.
